Los Machos Dance

Mask Mexico Item 211

$525.

6.5 H. x 5.25 W. inches

Wood and oil paint.   Obvious signs of over paint.

Final quarter 20th century.

Notes:  Probably, the original character represented a coastal fisherman.  The four red  decorations on the face represent scars from fights where machetes were used, not uncommon in rural Mexico.  However, this mask was used for a dance called Los Machos, far from the coast.  It is my belief that the mask style was copied from an earlier coastal model.
