Huichol Tambor - Drum - Tepo

Huichol Item 294

$900.

27 inches H. x 33 inches circumference

Final Quarter 20th Century

Used by several Huichol communities for the annual Fiesta del Tambor in the state of Nayarit.  Deer skin cover attached by 11 wooden dowels.  Smoked filled cavity due to the small fire placed beneath the drum when using.  This causes the skin to stretch and improves the drum's sound.  Drum has been blessed with sacrificial blood, as is the tradition.  Of interest:  Following tradition, a shaman must dream where the tree is to be found for a drum.  Once indicated by the shaman, it is felled and fashioned according to tradition.  Desirable acquisition for ethnographic departments, museums and serious collectors.
